Tomato, cucumber, carrot, and red onion salad

The bulk of this salad can be made in advance and at the last moment tossed together with freshly cut tomatoes, fresh basil and vinegars. Purple onions are thinly sliced and tossed with extra virgin olive oil along with garlic, thinly sliced hothouse cucumbers, and carrots which are quickly blanched so the crispness is still there with a slight give to the crunch.
